Ephesians 6:4 “Bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”
The family in America is broken. Smaller and smaller numbers of children are raised by their parents. Many are being raised by someone other than a parent. A grandparent, aunt, or foster parent has had to take that responsibility.
More and more, children are ‘raising themselves’. The parents have abdicated their rolls and left the children to fend for themselves. They wash their own clothes, fix their own meager meals (usually not a healthy meal), and entertain themselves. Television used to be the babysitter of choice, now it’s the cell phone–Netflix, Snapchat, etc.
For the parents, being a dad or mom has been pushed aside as they are caught up in their own interests. Sadly, those interest will sometimes include alcohol and drugs. They are not parenting because they are not really there. Maybe they’re there physically, but are passed out in bed or on the couch.
Because of bad parenting, children are insecure and confused, have issues with anger. They search for significance in their lives. Their lives seemed to them to lack value. This is one reason for the escalation of suicide amongst teens and young adults. They’ve not been given anything to hold on to. They’ve not been taught integrity, love, and faithfulness.
Train up your child in the way they should go. Be the parent your child needs.
