Roy’s Blog: “Flight to Egypt”

Jesus was born in humble surroundings. Joseph and Mary were not wealthy. Joseph was a carpenter. When the angel came to warn Joseph to flee to Egypt with Mary and the child Jesus, Jesus was about two years old. That is why Herod said to kill all boys two and under. This was just after the Maggi or wise men came to see the child that had been prophesied. There were probably several of these wise men, not just three. We have used three because there were three different gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. A full entourage of camels, wise men, and probably many servants came to bring gifts. Also because they were carrying great wealth, they more than likely had a military escort. We have no way of knowing how much gold, frankincense, and myrrh were brought to the family, but it was enough to sustain them during their time in Egypt. They paid their own way. They didn’t go as refugees looking to be taken care of. Isn’t it amazing how God provides protection and provision?

This also fulfilled a prophecy  (Hosea 11:1) “I called my Son out of Egypt.”
